Pramono: Bantargebang Waste Landslide Triggered by Extreme Rainfall
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the waste landslide at Bantargebang Waste Treatment Facility, which claimed four lives, was triggered by extreme rainfall. He explained that the rain caused the surface of the waste mound to become slippery, thereby triggering the landslide.
“The landslide incident occurred in zone 4A at 14:30 and is believed to have been triggered by extreme rainfall on Sunday, which caused the operational road and a 40-metre stretch of the Ciketing River to be blocked by waste,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (9 March 2026).
“Yesterday the rainfall was very high. Yesterday it was 264 millimetres per day. That is among the highest rainfall recorded in Jakarta,” he added.
According to him, water rendered the waste pile unstable. Consequently, waste material shifted, triggering the landslide.
“Because rain that had been falling for a long time entered the waste, it caused sliding or slipperiness and then a landslide downward,” he said.
Beyond evacuation efforts, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is working to restore the flow of the Ciketing River, which was blocked by landslide waste. He expressed hope that the river will soon flow normally.
“It is clearly visible in the field that the river is blocked. For that reason, it will be normalised immediately, particularly the Ciketing River so it can resume functioning,” he said.
Operations in zone 4A of Bantargebang Waste Treatment Facility have been temporarily suspended. Waste deliveries from Jakarta have been redirected to other zones.
Pramono stated that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also preparing a temporary zone to accommodate waste. He expressed hope that the landslide response efforts will be completed quickly.
