Pramono Bans Ondel-ondel for Begging on the Streets, Asks Satpol PP to Take Action
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has decided to ban the use of ondel-ondel for begging on the streets. This policy was taken because ondel-ondel is considered an icon of Betawi culture that must have its honour preserved.
“Regarding ondel-ondel, we have made a decision to ban ondel-ondel on the streets. Ondel-ondel is a trademark or icon of Betawi, of Jakarta,” Pramono said at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (11/4/2026).
Nevertheless, Pramono said there would be no sanctions yet for residents who continue to use ondel-ondel for begging. The government will first take a persuasive approach through education.
He added that for the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Jakarta City next year, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government plans to hold more elaborate ondel-ondel performances as a form of respect for this Betawi cultural icon.
Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also planned to include the ban on using ondel-ondel as a means of begging in the Regional Regulation (Perda) on Betawi Customary Institutions that is currently being drafted.
Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno conveyed this after attending the Pancasila Birthday Commemoration Ceremony at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (2/6/2025).
“Coincidentally, we are drafting a Perda on Betawi Customary Institutions. Well, we will include it so that it (ondel-ondel) performs in a proper place to perform, that’s the essence,” Rano said.
“In recent times, we have seen it being treated merely as an ornamental toy, which is concerning,” he added.
