Pramono Bans Civil Organisations from Sweeping Restaurants During Ramadan
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has banned civil organisations (ormas) or any other parties from conducting sweeps or raids on restaurants that remain open during Ramadan. The prohibition was issued to ensure the capital maintains a conducive atmosphere throughout the fasting month.
"Governor Pramono Anung does not permit civil organisations or any party to conduct sweeps or raids on restaurants that remain open during Ramadan," said the Governor's Special Staff for Public Communications, Cyril Raoul Hakim, also known as Chico Hakim, when asked for confirmation on Monday, 16 February 2026.
The primary consideration behind the ban, he said, is to ensure the Ramadan atmosphere remains one of peace, tolerance and interfaith harmony. As governor of a city with a Muslim majority but high levels of diversity, Pramono bears responsibility for maintaining Jakarta's stability.
"The direction is indeed towards strengthening tolerance, mutual respect and maintaining public order so that fasting worship can proceed comfortably for all residents," Chico said.
Chico noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government is instead emphasising positive measures, such as securing food stocks, maintaining price stability, strengthening religious activities and monitoring the situation to ensure conditions remain conducive.
"Activities that create vulnerability or disturbances are not permitted, but those that promote comfort are supported," he said.
Chico mentioned that an official letter regarding the policy is being coordinated and is targeted for release before the start of Ramadan on 18 February 2026. Administratively, the letter will be issued by the Regional Secretary.
He explained that in previous years, proclamations regarding sweeps and sahur on the road activities were generally issued by relevant institutions, such as the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief, in coordination with the Jakarta Provincial Government.
