Pramono Awaits Central Government Direction Regarding Giant Sea Wall

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that he will await direction from the central government regarding the construction of the Giant Sea Wall as an anticipation measure against tidal flooding.

“If we want to resolve this comprehensively and in the long term, then the Giant Sea Wall is very necessary. We are waiting for direction from the central government, and we certainly hope that the Jakarta segment can commence soon,” Pramono said in Central Jakarta on Thursday (3/9).

Pramono claimed that tidal flooding in Jakarta has actually been relatively managed through the existence of coastal embankments.

“In Jakarta itself, we have actually built… coastal embankments. In Jakarta, it is actually relatively handled. If tidal flooding occurs repeatedly, we can overcome it,” he explained.

Earlier this year, Pramono expressed plans for the construction of the Giant Sea Malaysia in Jakarta to begin in September 2026.

“The plan is for the groundbreaking to begin in September this year,” Pramono stated on Tuesday (20/1).

DKI Jakarta is reported to have been allocated a 19-kilometre construction segment, an increase from the previous 12-kilometre allocation.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto also announced that the Giant Sea Wall project on the north coast of Java will soon be constructed. He conveyed this during the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Plenary Session on Friday (14/8).

“The Giant Sea Wall, large embankments to secure the north coast of Java. This is something we absolutely must do; let us not wait for disaster to strike,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo cited the Netherlands as an example of a country that built a Giant Sea Wall as long-term protection infrastructure.

“The Netherlands built long-term protection infrastructure without needing to wait for a disaster. The Giant Sea Wall in the Netherlands now protects millions of Dutch citizens and serves as a symbol of Dutch national technological capability,” he said.

However, this Giant Sea Wall is projected to be completed only in 15 to 20 years.

“This is a long time. I do not know which president will eventually inaugurate it. But I am determined that the 8th President will initiate this project,” Prabowo continued.
