Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has requested Plaza Senayan and Senayan City to build a connecting tunnel as an effort to ease congestion in the Senayan area while improving pedestrian connectivity. He noted that the presence of two shopping centres facing each other without an underground access point is one of the causes of disrupted traffic flow in the area. “Jakarta must be managed better. Congestion nodes must be unravelled. Plaza Senayan and Senayan City can actually be connected so it is simpler and mutually beneficial for both parties,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7). He explained that the space inside the tunnel could also be utilised as a business area for MSMEs, thereby not only increasing connectivity but also encouraging economic activity. He said the management of both malls have agreed to the construction of the shared access. He has also instructed the Development Assistant to immediately follow up on the plan. According to him, the concept is not new. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has built an underground tunnel network connecting Grand Hyatt, Pullman, Mandarin Oriental, and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski in the Bundaran HI area, which is integrated with the MRT Station. “If Senayan is not connected, the movement of people greatly disrupts transportation and often causes congestion. Therefore, we encourage the construction of this tunnel to be realised immediately,” Pramono stated.
