Pramono Asks Jakartans to Adopt 5M Protocol Against Volcanic Ash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung urged residents to implement five safety measures, known as the 5Ms, if their neighborhoods are affected by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
“If your area begins to be affected by volcanic ash, implement the 5Ms,” Pramono said during an official broadcast in Jakarta on Sunday, September 6.
What Is the 5M Safety Measures?
Pramono detailed the five steps as follows:
Memakai masker (Wearing protective gear): Wear face masks or appropriate personal protective equipment, particularly when engaging in outdoor activities.
Menutup pintu, jendela, dan sumber air (Sealing domestic spaces): Keep doors, windows, and household water sources closed to prevent volcanic ash contamination.
Membatasi aktivitas di luar ruangan (Limiting outdoor activity): Minimize non-essential outdoor activities when ashfall becomes noticeably dense.
Membersihkan endapan abu (Cleaning ash deposits safely): Dampen accumulated ash with water before sweeping or wiping to prevent fine particles from re-entering the air.
Mendatangi fasilitas kesehatan (Seeking immediate medical care): Visit a healthcare facility immediately if experiencing respiratory distress or worsening eye irritation.
Current Volcanic Status and Dispersion
Pramono explained that the Jakarta Provincial Government maintains active coordination with the central government, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to track volcanic developments.
“As is known, Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Alert Level III, or Siaga status. Currently, volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has spread to several regions in Indonesia, including Jakarta,” he said.
He noted that the direction and severity of ashfall remain heavily dependent on wind patterns. Thus, authorities continue tracking atmospheric movements to calibrate official emergency responses.
In addition to personal safety measures, Governor Pramono urged the public to stay calm and remain cautious regarding misinformation. Residents are advised to rely strictly on verified government channels for updates rather than unverified social media reports.
“On occasions like this, we ask Jakarta residents to monitor information from official channels of the central government, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and not to spread information that has not been properly verified,” he said.
Pramono reiterated the importance of early health intervention for vulnerable individuals facing breathing difficulties or eye inflammation due to airborne ash.
“Stay alert, protect yourself and your family. Let’s work together to protect Jakarta by protecting ourselves from volcanic ash,” Pramono said.
