Pramono: As Governor, I Will Not Compromise on Thuggery in Jakarta
JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has affirmed that he will not compromise on any form of thuggery in the capital.
He made this statement when questioned by reporters about the case of a bajaj driver in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, who was allegedly extorted by thugs.
“There will be no more compromises on thuggery in Jakarta. As governor, I will not hesitate to take action,” Pramono said when met at the East Jakarta City Hall Office on Sunday (12/4/2026).
“Yesterday, I watched the video and have already asked the Civil Service Police Unit and department heads to take firm action on this matter,” he added.
Previously, a video showing a bajaj driver allegedly becoming a victim of extortion by two men in the Tanah Abang area went viral on social media on Saturday (11/4/2026).
In the video, the bajaj driver admitted to having to pay Rp 100,000 per day to avoid intimidation.
The footage shows the bajaj driver handing something from his bag to a man wearing a black T-shirt, khaki trousers, and a black cap. The man then walks away carrying the item.
Shortly after, another man wearing a hoodie jacket and white cap approaches the bajaj and asks the driver for something again. In the video, a passenger asks about the practice occurring.
“Yes, extortion,” the bajaj driver replies.
While explaining, the bajaj driver also shows the cracked windscreen of his vehicle. He says the damage occurred because it was smashed by the extortionists when he was late in paying the money.
“It’s not that I’m not brave enough to fight back, but I’m just trying to make a living there,” the bajaj driver says.
Meanwhile, the Tanah Abang Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head, AKP Ikhsan Rangga, stated that his team is still investigating the case.
“It is being thoroughly examined and investigated,” Ikhsan said.
