Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has expressed his appreciation for the ‘Threads of Wax’ exhibition, a collaborative effort between Indonesian and Hungarian artists, held at the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics in Kota Tua, West Jakarta. Pramono stated that the exhibition not only presents high-quality artwork but also demonstrates a harmonious blend of the two nations’ cultures, strengthening a friendship that has lasted nearly seven decades. ‘This is not just an art exhibition, but also a strong symbol of the relationship between Indonesia and Hungary, which has been established for almost 70 years and continues to develop in various fields,’ he said. He noted that Jakarta and Budapest have been sister cities since 2 February 2009, cooperating in arts, culture, and youth programmes. Pramono admitted he was impressed by the works, particularly seeing batik designed by a Hungarian designer for the first time, featuring strong, colourful patterns that combine the distinctiveness of Indonesian batik from Lasem and Yogyakarta with Hungarian floral motifs. ‘This combination demonstrates an extraordinary cultural collaboration,’ he remarked. As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary in 2027, the Provincial Government is expanding international cooperation in education, creative economy, urban innovation, and sustainable development. Pramono noted Hungary is a strategic partner in education, with many Indonesian students already studying there. The Threads of Wax exhibition holds special significance as it coincides with Jakarta’s 499th anniversary and 70 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Hungary. Beyond culture, bilateral ties include Hungary’s support for 36 water treatment installations across Indonesia, the provision of approximately 110 full scholarships annually for Indonesian students, and employment for around 2,500 Indonesian workers, particularly in the electric vehicle industry.
