Pramono Apologises, Zebra Crossing in Tebet Addressed Only After Going Viral
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has apologised because the zebra crossing on Jalan Prof Dr Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta, was only addressed after going viral on social media.
He acknowledged that the government was slow to respond to the on-the-ground conditions. In fact, the pedestrian crossing facilities at that location had been unavailable for a long time.
“We apologise for that. I thank and respect the creativity of the residents,” said Pramono when met at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
According to him, this shows that residents care about pedestrian safety.
“We appreciate our creative friends, but we must return this to what is already regulated regarding zebra crossings,” said Pramono.
Nevertheless, he stressed that zebra crossings must not be made haphazardly. There are rules that must be followed.
Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government will repair the zebra crossing to meet standards.
“What is currently happening in the field, we will perfect it again, we will return it to the rules that are indeed regulated for zebra crossings. There are indeed rules for that, and they apply not only nationally but internationally,” said Pramono.
Previously, the zebra crossing on Jalan Dr Soepomo towards Pasar Minggu came under the spotlight after being repainted by artists and road activists.
Not just white blocks on black asphalt, the zebra crossing here also features illustrations of Pac-Man game characters.
“If residents use white paint, it seems ordinary. So this is more like a jab at the government. Like, we can do it, why can’t the government,” Ijoel told Kompas.com on Sunday (29/3/2026).
The zebra crossing made with spray paint is estimated to last only one month.
Head of the South Jakarta Road Infrastructure Sub-Department, Rifki Rismal, said the zebra crossing will be removed and replaced with a standard zebra crossing.
“Yes, it will definitely be removed soon. Later, the Road Infrastructure Department will handle it,” said Rifki when contacted separately on Sunday.
