Pramono Anung: Jakarta's Car Free Day Becomes a Tourist Magnet for Malaysians and Thais
The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has revealed that Car Free Day (CFD) in Jakarta is transforming into a tourist magnet for foreign nationals. Travellers from neighbouring countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, are now looking at this weekly event as a primary destination for their visits.
Pramono explained that these international tourists intentionally schedule visits to Jakarta to experience the atmosphere of public space sports, often combined with experiences using modern transportation modes such as the Whoosh high-speed train.
“We are monitoring that many people, whether from Malaysia, Singapore, or Thailand, are coming to Jakarta. Besides using the Whoosh train to Bandung, one of their main goals is Car Free Day. As seen earlier, there are already visitors from Malaysia utilising this,” said Pramono while inspecting the CFD area on Jalan HR Rasuna Said, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Sunday (7/6/2026).
As someone who has regularly participated in CFD activities since before his appointment as Governor, Pramono believes the Kuningan area holds great potential to become a new centre of attention, comparable to the Sudirman-Thamrin area. He is optimistic that Kuningan will become a new landmark for public space in Jakarta.
This optimism is based on several advantages, ranging from iconic skyscraper views and better air quality to highly adequate transport accessibility.
“I see the potential in Kunting. Looking at the view, the air, and the access, this will certainly become a new landmark for Car Free Day in Jakarta,” he remarked.
In addition to developing tourism potential, the presence of CFD in Kuningan is expected to decentralise the mass concentration currently found in the Sudirman-Thamrin area. Currently, the Sudirman-Thamrin area is considered overcrowded, hosting between 40,000 to 50,000 visitors every week.
Pramono emphasised that ease of access is the key factor for the public to transition to the Kuningan CFD location. The support of integrated public transport in this area is considered highly capable of serving residents from both within and outside Jakarta.
“I believe that because the access here is easier—Transjakarta operates here, and the LRT from Bekasi or Cibubur can reach this location—access from outside Jakarta is very easy. I am very confident that this place will become a preferred destination for the public,” he concluded.
