Pramono Anung Emphasises Importance of Fulfilling Citizens' Basic Food Rights
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has stressed the importance of fulfilling the basic right to food for every citizen.
Pramono made the remarks during the final opinion on the Draft Regional Regulation on Food System Governance and the Draft Regional Regulation on the Environmental Protection and Management Plan at a plenary session of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives on Wednesday.
According to him, food security will determine the quality of human resources and the quality of a nation. Therefore, Jakarta needs policies that can integrate the pillars of food availability, food affordability and food utilisation.
“The existence of the Draft Regional Regulation on Food System Governance is expected to realise food governance that provides fair, equitable and sustainable benefits for every citizen, especially the poor and neglected,” Pramono said.
He said the regional regulation would serve as a legal foundation for the executive in designing coordinated policies, programmes and budgeting for food system governance.
As a global city and the centre of the national economy, Jakarta currently faces various development challenges, ranging from climate change, environmental pollution, limited natural resources, declining environmental quality, to the increasing demand for urban space.
“Therefore, Jakarta’s development must be carried out with attention to the balance between economic growth, public welfare and environmental sustainability,” he explained.
Pramono said the Environmental Protection and Management Plan is a 30-year long-term strategic planning document that serves as the basis for determining Jakarta’s development direction.
The enactment of the Regional Regulation on the Environmental Protection and Management Plan is a concrete manifestation of the executive’s commitment to strengthening environmental governance that is adaptive to the dynamics of urban development.
He also expressed hope that the spirit of synergy between the Regional House of Representatives and the Jakarta Provincial Government would continue to be strengthened to produce various strategic work programmes beneficial to public welfare.
