Pramono Anung Claims Rise in Public Transport Passengers Effectively Reduces Pollution

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo believes that the increase in public transport users is the key to reducing air pollution in the capital. This was conveyed following public scrutiny of Jakarta’s deteriorating air quality during the friendly match between Chelsea and AC Milan on Saturday (8/8).

Pramono revealed that there is currently a positive trend in the use of mass transport modes in Jakarta. Based on the latest data, the number of Transjakarta passengers has increased by almost 15%, while the MRT has risen significantly by 23%, and the LRT is up by around 12%.

“The increase in the number of public transport passengers is due to fares that remain affordable. In addition, the Jakarta Government has also made public transport free for 15 specific groups,” said Pramono when met in the South Jakarta area on Tuesday (11/8).

Besides the fare factor, internal government policy has also contributed to the rise. Pramono cited the requirement for civil servants to use public transport every Wednesday as one of the triggers for the increased volume of public service users.

The issue of Jakarta’s air pollution has once again become a hot topic after photos from the “Indonesia Super Cup 2026” match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium circulated. In posts from the official Chelsea and AC Milan accounts, Jakarta’s sky appeared dull and grey, which netizens then linked to poor air quality.

Responding to these complaints, Pramono explained that dry weather conditions have worsened the situation. As a short-term measure, the Jakarta Government is preparing a weather modification scheme to bring rain to the capital and its surrounding areas.

“We are preparing artificial rain. As soon as there are clouds, we will immediately create artificial rain for Jakarta and its surroundings because it has been too long without rain,” he concluded.
