Jakarta (ANTARA) — Governor of Jakarta Pramono Anung attended the Melasti ceremony at Pure Segera temple in Cilincing, North Jakarta, to mark the sacred Hindu New Year celebration of Saka 1948, which falls on 19 March 2026.

“I sincerely hope that the Melasti ceremony to welcome the Sacred New Year of Saka 1948 for all Hindus in Jakarta will be conducted well, so that the Catur Brata Penyepian (Four Fold Path of Self-Restraint) may be properly observed, enabling people to become better individuals and begin life anew with a pure heart, while protecting the earth through self-reflection,” said Pramono during the ceremony at Pure Segera temple in Cilincing on Sunday.

Pramono also praised the ogoh-ogoh parade held at Hotel Indonesia Roundabout the previous week as a tangible demonstration of the city’s collective commitment to making Jakarta a welcoming home for all religious communities.

“It is hoped that this parade also serves as an open space for cultural preservation,” he added.

Made Sudarta, chairman of Suka Duka Hindu Dharma, noted that numerous temples in Jakarta and surrounding areas participated in this Melasti ceremony.

Hundreds of Hindu worshippers attended the Melasti ceremony at Pure Segera, which proceeded solemnly from the early morning. Participants wore traditional white prayer attire, with men dressed in shirts and udeng headgear, whilst women wore kebaya and scarves.

Sekar Jagat dancers welcomed guests by performing the pendet traditional dance.

The event was also attended by Deputy Minister of Population and Family Development, Isyana Bagoes Okaz, North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat, and their respective officials.
