Pramono and Indonesian Ambassador to the US Discuss Developing Jakarta into an International Entertainment Hub
The Indonesian Ambassador to the US, Indroyono Soesilo, and the Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, discussed plans to develop Jakarta as an international entertainment industry hub and explored potential cooperation with the Motion Picture Association for film production. According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, the meeting between Ambassador Indroyono and Governor Pramono took place at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (31/8).
“Through the facilitation of easier licensing and the organisation of international-scale performances, Jakarta is increasingly being considered as a stage for world-class musicians,” the statement noted. By the end of 2026, several international artists are scheduled to perform in Jakarta, including BTS, The Weeknd, and Guns N’ Roses. This series of performances is expected to impact not only the entertainment sector but also tourism, the creative economy, hospitality, and Jakarta’s image as an international event destination.
Both parties also discussed exploring cooperation between the Jakarta Provincial Government and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) to promote Jakarta as a location for international film production. Ambassador Indroyono and Governor Pramono also discussed the progress of developing the Indonesia Center in the Broadway and Times Square area of New York, serving as a means to promote Indonesian economy, trade, tourism, and culture in the US.
Regarding educational cooperation, the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to send Jakarta’s youth to pursue Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) degrees at several leading universities in the US. “Governor Pramono Anung stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing a regional scholarship programme with a scheme similar to the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which is planned to commence in 2027,” the statement added.
The Indonesian Embassy mentioned that an existing partnership is the Jakarta-Los Angeles sister city relationship, which covers trade, economy, tourism, arts and culture, the environment, urban planning, education, as well as science and technology. In recent years, this cooperation has been expanded to include eco-friendly transportation issues, including a collaboration between TransJakarta and the Los Angeles City Government.
This cooperation will be followed up during Governor Pramono Anung’s meeting with the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, at the Urban 20 (U20) forum—a G20 engagement group—scheduled to take place in New York from 19-23 September 2026. In addition to cooperation with Los Angeles, Governor Pramono mentioned that Jakarta also maintains a partnership with the State of Arkansas, which opens opportunities for collaboration in economy, culture, and public services. The Indonesian Embassy also noted that the exploration of a sister city partnership between Jakarta and New York City continues to be developed as a new opportunity for cooperation.
