Pramono Aims to Boost Public Transport Use, Says Jakarta Connectivity at 93%

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated his ambition to see more people using public transport in the capital, emphasising its importance in reducing traffic congestion. He made the remarks following the inauguration of the Jakarta City Transport Council at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Friday (3/7/2026). Pramono described congestion as one of Jakarta’s classic problems. “One of Jakarta’s main problems, a classic problem, is congestion. Congestion in Jakarta occurs due to many factors,” Pramono said in his speech. He noted that approximately 4 million people commute to Jakarta for work, with the majority currently using private vehicles for their activities. Pramono expressed his desire to change this trend, citing the Transjabodetabek bus policy as an example of efforts to reduce private vehicle usage. “All this time, transport has largely relied on private vehicles or private transport. Therefore, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government under my leadership is changing that paradigm,” he stated. He said that public transport connectivity in Jakarta has already reached 93%. However, Pramono noted that the number of regular users is not yet optimal. “This is done to encourage people to shift their transport from private vehicles to public transport. Jakarta’s connectivity is actually already at 93%. But those who use it continuously, according to the latest data I will ask the Transportation Agency to provide, may only be around 27-28%. Even that has already improved transport management in Jakarta,” he explained. Pramono hopes more residents will use public transport, adding that the quality of Jakarta’s public transport system has gained global recognition. “This is reflected in the results from a credible international institution regarding transport, which now places Jakarta as the number two city in ASEAN after Singapore. You may have already read about it. In Asia, it is ranked 8th, and 17th in the world,” he said.
