Pramono Admits Jakarta's Messy Cables Are a Complex Problem

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the effort to tidy up the capital’s messy cables will commence following the issuance of a regional regulation on Integrated Utility Network Facilities (SJUT). However, he acknowledged that the process of organising the overhead cables cannot be completed all at once due to the complexity of the problem.

He made these remarks in response to concerns about the many tangled cables and leaning poles on Jakarta’s roads, which are considered dangerous for road users. "With the existence of the SJUT regulation, the steps to manage and organise the cables in Jakarta will begin immediately. Some have even already started," Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

Nevertheless, Pramono stressed that organising the entire utility network requires time. He noted that the vast number of cable networks spread across Jakarta makes it impossible to carry out the work simultaneously. "It cannot all be done at once because the cable problem is so extensive and complex. However, with this regulation, the organisation has begun," he said.

Pramono assured that the Jakarta Provincial Government will continue the cable arrangement in stages, guided by the SJUT regulation. He expressed hope that the regulation would serve as a foundation for a more orderly utility network, thereby improving public safety and the city’s aesthetics.

The issue of dangling cables has recently led to serious accidents. On Thursday (18/6), a female student from SMAN 6 Jakarta died after being caught by a dangling cable on Jalan Lauser, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. More recently, on Monday (6/7), an online motorcycle taxi passenger was snagged by a dangling cable on Jalan Widya Chandra VIII, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
