Prambanan Temple to Remain Open During Prabowo and Modi Visit
The Prambanan temple complex will remain open to the public during the scheduled visit of President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Management has confirmed the tourist area will not be fully closed, with visitor comfort maintained optimally. “Public access will remain open at several points, including the Candi Sewu, Candi Lumbung, Candi Bubrah, and the Shiva Field areas on 7 and 8 July 2026,” said InJourney Destination Management Commercial Director Gistang Panutur on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.
Gistang explained that only the entry flow will be diverted during the state visit, with tourists directed through the Candi Sewu entrance located in the Klaten region of Central Java. Management has announced that tickets purchased online for the affected dates remain valid, with adjustments to the visitable areas and additional special facilities provided as added value. Meanwhile, on-site ticket purchases will be limited, with counters closing at 3 p.m. Western Indonesia Time.
Gistang emphasised that the operational adjustments would not diminish efforts to provide a memorable experience for visitors. Tourists will still have the full opportunity to explore the cultural and historical richness that is the main attraction of this international destination, with strict security measures in place. “We ensure the visitor experience exploring Candi Sewu, Candi Bubrah, and Candi Lumbung remains exciting and meaningful, while prioritising visitor safety and comfort,” he said.
He assessed that the diplomatic meeting between the two leaders holds strategic significance for strengthening future bilateral relations between Indonesia and India. “We fully support this state agenda through planned operational adjustments, so that the entire series of state activities can proceed safely, comfortably, and memorably,” Gistang stated. In connection with the schedule adjustment, management has urged the public and tourists who had planned visits during this period to adjust their travel times accordingly.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Yogyakarta on 8 July 2026, where he will support the Prambanan temple restoration plan, a joint commitment of the Indonesian and Indian governments since 2025. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty said the Yogyakarta visit relates to the agreement between the two countries to support the Prambanan temple restoration, as outlined in the 2025 Indonesia-India Joint Statement. “Regarding Yogyakarta, he is visiting because, if you look at the 2025 Joint Statement, the two leaders agreed that India would support the restoration of Prambanan Temple,” he said on Friday, 3 July 2026.
According to Chakravorty, since the joint statement was issued, the Indian government has been working with Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture, the Indonesian Heritage Institute, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to strengthen the restoration plan. He explained that the ASI is an institution with expertise in restoring ancient temples and monuments, having previously been involved in the restoration of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and currently working on similar projects in Laos and Vietnam. An ASI team has conducted an on-site review of Prambanan Temple and prepared a project report currently under evaluation. “We believe that when the two leaders meet, they will announce the commencement of the temple restoration work,” he said. Chakravorty assessed that the Prambanan restoration could potentially strengthen Yogyakarta’s tourism appeal while attracting more foreign tourists, including from India, and is part of efforts to develop other tourist destinations in Indonesia.
