Prambanan Temple Restoration: PM Modi Guarantees Surge in Tourist Arrivals

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes the number of tourists from India visiting Prambanan Temple will multiply once the restoration is completed. Modi made the remark while inaugurating the conservation and restoration cooperation for Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, together with President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

“I can guarantee that after our joint renovation efforts, the number of tourists and (Hindu) devotees from India will grow exponentially in the future,” said PM Modi in Yogyakarta.

On that occasion, Modi praised President Prabowo’s ability to plan the Prambanan Temple restoration project.

PM Modi said Prabowo had a clear strategy when planning the restoration of Indonesia’s largest Hindu site. “Today, I want to convey that President Prabowo, as a soldier, knows how to plan something,” said Modi.

With thorough planning, Modi is confident the restoration work on Prambanan Temple can be completed ahead of schedule.

The temple restoration cooperation programme is a long-term project scheduled to run from 2026 to 2036. The project focuses on restoring more than 200 perwara, or ancillary temples, in the Prambanan Temple complex, which currently lie in ruins.

Modi said Prabowo had asked him to promise that both countries would complete the project before 2029. “And I will need to visit Indonesia once again to inaugurate the temple complex after the restoration,” said Modi.

Modi then reaffirmed his promise that the Indonesia-India conservation and restoration project for Prambanan Temple could be completed within three years. “And together we will celebrate the restoration and inauguration with a grand festival,” he said.
