Pram Surprised Jakarta is the Second Safest City in ASEAN, Overtaking Bangkok and Manila
Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, responded to the results of the 2024 Global Resilience Index survey, which placed Jakarta as the second safest city in the ASEAN region. Pramono admitted to being surprised yet thankful for the achievement.
“I was actually quite surprised myself,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (7/4/2026).
Pramono stated that the improved sense of safety among residents and international perceptions of security are inseparable from various collaborative activities organised by the DKI Provincial Government together with the community throughout the year. These activities range from Christmas Carol, Chinese New Year celebrations, Nyepi, to Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, all of which proceeded peacefully.
“Various diversity activities conducted in public spaces, alhamdulillah, demonstrate the strength of togetherness in Jakarta. In my view, this serves as a showcase or symbol of Jakarta itself,” he remarked.
Hitherto, Pramono noted, Jakarta has typically occupied a middle position in the list of ASEAN cities, usually around sixth or seventh place. However, for the first time, Jakarta has successfully overtaken Bangkok, Manila, and even Kuala Lumpur.
“Jakarta, which has always been below Bangkok, below Manila, below Kuala Lumpur, now Jakarta is only behind Singapore. And we must maintain and safeguard this together,” he stressed.
Pramono emphasised that this achievement is not solely the result of government efforts, but rather the fruit of collective awareness among citizens in protecting the city.
“In my opinion, this is not because of City Hall. This is because of our collective awareness in safeguarding Jakarta together,” he said.
He affirmed that the DKI Provincial Government will continue to open public spaces for community activities as long as they remain orderly and safe.
“I attend all events, whatever the activity, so that everyone feels they own Jakarta together,” he concluded.
