Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, stated that 34 fire cases throughout September 2026 in Jakarta were successfully prevented thanks to good coordination between the fire department (damkar) and the community.

“Thanks to good communication and preventive actions, there were actually, if I am not mistaken, 34 fires in Jakarta that we managed to prevent,” Pramono said in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to him, this prevention was possible due to the effective coordination between firefighters and the public.

“Why? Because from the start, the community informs the fire department, and the community also works together through mutual cooperation (gotong royong) to carry out prevention, especially in densely populated areas, such as Tambora, Cakung, and so on,” Pramono explained.

The man affectionately known as Pram also assessed that Jakarta’s disaster management, particularly regarding fires, is functioning well. Furthermore, the ‘one RT, one portable fire extinguisher (APAR)’ programme is currently active in the capital.

“In fact, the APAR activity for each RW (neighbourhood unit) is already running in Jakarta, although I must conduct further checks to see whether the equipment is still functioning properly or not,” Pramono revealed.

Previously, he disclosed that 457 fire incidents occurred in the capital between July and August 2026.

“Based on reports from the Regional Disaster Management Agency, from July to August, there were 457 fire incidents in Jakarta, with the most recent incident in August numbering approximately 240,” Pramono stated while presiding over the Jakarta Guard Assembly for Dry Season Preparedness at Monas.

He noted that the most dominant suspected cause of fires is electrical short circuits.

The second suspected cause is waste burning, along with several other causes resulting from resident negligence, such as improper disposal of cigarette butts.

Furthermore, Pramono stated that the dry season conditions, with increasingly hot weather, could increase the risk of fire and drought.

Therefore, he requested that all ranks of the Jakarta Provincial Government remain on alert to face any unwanted incidents during the dry season.
