Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has requested that water pumps be properly maintained as preparation for the rainy season in September. “I am asking the water resources team to maintain the existing pumps and prepare for September and beyond,” Pramono said when confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday. This is because Jakarta will enter a fairly long dry season. The El Niño phenomenon is forecasted to affect Indonesia starting in April and ending in September 2026. Nevertheless, Pramono has asked his team to prepare for flooding, including by maintaining the existing pumps. In addition, Pramono has requested the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to continue the river normalisation that has been decided. “Namely (normalisation of) Ciliwung, Cakung Lama, and Krukut. So there are four that we are doing, hopefully this will form the basis for improvements and preparations to face flooding in Jakarta,” Pramono stated. Through the Instagram account @brin_indonesia, BRIN has informed that this phenomenon is expected to occur simultaneously with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The combination of the two has the potential to trigger a longer and drier dry season in several regions of Indonesia. The impacts are not only on the weather but also on the food and environmental sectors. For this reason, a researcher from BRIN’s Centre for Climate and Atmospheric Research, Prof. Erma Yulihastin, has reminded the government to anticipate the various impacts arising from this phenomenon.
