Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo discussed opportunities for developing modern and sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD) to support urban transportation in Jakarta with the Shenzhen Metro Group in Guangdong, China.

“We want to compare the effectiveness of MRT in various cities around the world. Shenzhen serves as a reference due to the efficiency of its services and operations,” said Pramono in his official statement on Friday.

In that meeting, the man familiarly called Pram highlighted the achievement gap between the two cities, Shenzhen and Jakarta.

Shenzhen Metro can transport up to 13 million passengers per day with a network of around 635 kilometres (km), while Jakarta’s MRT currently serves about 128,000 passengers per day.

“This is urgent because mobility in and out of Jakarta reaches around 4 million people per day. The MRT must be developed as a long-term solution to address congestion while supporting agglomeration area integration,” Pramono stated.

During the visit, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between MRT Jakarta and Shenzhen Metro Group for TOD area development and the construction of integrated urban transportation systems.

President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) Tuhiyat assessed that the cooperation has strategic value in developing the TOD system.

Shenzhen’s experience, he said, can serve as a reference in building an integrated railway operational system.

“This MoU is a step to resolve modern city issues while locking in future economic growth,” Tuhiyat revealed.
