Prabowo's Three Directives Following Bekasi Train Accident That Claims Lives
President Prabowo Subianto visited the victims of the train accident involving the Argo Bromo and KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. Prabowo instructed improvements to railway crossings and an investigation into the accident.
As summarised by detikcom on Tuesday (28/4/2026), the accident occurred on Monday (27/4) evening. Fifteen people died and dozens were injured.
Prabowo took the time to visit the victims being treated at Bekasi City Hospital. Prabowo arrived around 08:39 WIB. He was accompanied by Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Also present was Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono.
“Today I came to Bekasi Hospital, of course we are all saddened and shocked by the accident that has occurred,” said Prabowo after visiting the train accident victims at Bekasi City Hospital on Tuesday (28/4).
Prabowo then expressed condolences. He also promised to conduct an investigation.
“I extend my condolences on behalf of myself and the government; we will immediately conduct an investigation into how the incident happened,” he emphasised.
- Approves Flyover in East Bekasi
Prabowo highlighted the many unguarded railway crossings. He stated that he would immediately approve the construction of a flyover.
“Bekasi has proposed building a flyover because Bekasi is also dense, and the railway needs are very important and urgent, so I have approved the immediate construction of the flyover,” he said.
He stated that the flyover funding would come from the central government. He mentioned that the construction of the flyover would be sourced from presidential assistance.
“Directly from presidential assistance,” he said.
- Orders Repair of Railway Crossings
Prabowo stated that there are 1,800 points of crossings like those in Bekasi on Java island. He suspected that these crossings have existed since long ago.
“Then, on Java there are 1,800 points that are also crossings like this; I think they have been there since the Dutch era, for several decades,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo ordered his subordinates to repair all the crossings. According to Prabowo, the repairs would include setting up guard posts and assessing the need for flyovers.
“Now let’s settle all of that; I have ordered us to repair all those crossings, whether by setting up guard posts or building flyovers; we will appoint the implementers later,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo said that repairing these crossings would cost approximately Rp 4 trillion. Prabowo emphasised that the repairs must be carried out immediately.
“We estimate it at nearly Rp 4 trillion for safety and because we really need the railway; it’s been several decades now, and it’s time we do it,” he said.
- Orders Investigation into the Accident
Prabowo ordered his subordinates to immediately investigate the cause of the accident. The investigation is to determine the cause of the accident.
“And we will immediately conduct an investigation into how the incident happened,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo acknowledged that there are still many railway crossings without barriers. He said this is dangerous.
“But in general, we note that many of these railway crossings are unguarded. We will address this immediately,” he explained.
