Prabowo's Target: Renovation of 228,000 Schools Across Indonesia Completed by 2028
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto conducted a surprise inspection of school revitalisation results and the implementation of the Nutritious School Lunch (MBG) programme at SMAN 1 Cilacap on Wednesday (29/4/2026). Prabowo wants 228,000 schools to have been renovated by 2028. During the visit, the head of state also directly inspected the renovation outcomes at SMAN 1 Cilacap, where seven classrooms and eight toilets have been renovated. He committed to improving schools, as education is the key to the nation’s revival. “This year, 70,000 (have been renovated), last year’s budget covered 17,000 schools. This year, 70,000 schools, next year my target is more than 100,000 schools,” Prabowo told reporters. According to his notes, Indonesia has 228,000 schools. He stated that the government will push for all schools in every region to be adequate and repaired. The targets are broken down as 87,000 completed this year, 100,000 in 2027, and an additional 100,000 in 2028. “I hope all schools are finished by 2028; if we’re not mistaken, we have 288,000 schools. If this year means 87,000 will be completed by year’s end, that means we still have 200,000 (schools left). If 100,000 in 2027 and 100,000 in 2028, all Indonesian schools will have been repaired,” he said. Not only will they be repaired, Prabowo also promised to improve school quality by adding smart digital screens, with three to four per school. “Later, we’ll have a central studio in Jakarta; the best teachers, for example in English, we’ll take native speakers who can teach everyone. Mandarin too. We want to add so that children can learn English, Mandarin, and some foreign languages starting from primary school,” he said.
