President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has spoken about the possibility that Indonesia will no longer import fuel oil in the coming years. This aligns with the government’s plan to close several diesel power plants to accelerate the transition to clean energy.

The statement was made by Prabowo during the inauguration of the first electric-based commercial vehicle assembly facility in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (9/4/2026).

Prabowo initially mentioned plans to mass-produce electric sedans in 2028. He targeted the construction of solar power plants with a capacity of 100 gigawatts within two years.

“We are also forming a company to produce sedans, electric sedans. So, brothers and sisters, I have decided and we will implement the 100 gigawatt electrification programme. We hope to achieve 100 gigawatts in two years. Then, there will be no more power plants using diesel, using solar oil, no,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo stated that the closure of PLN’s diesel power plants will also be carried out. This step will save fuel oil usage to the point of stopping fuel imports.

“With that, we will close 13 diesel power plants, which PLN will close. From closing them, we will save 200 thousand barrels per day. We still need to import one million barrels per day right now,” he said.

“By closing the diesel power plants, we will save 20 percent directly. And with the 100 gigawatts later, we will also save very significantly. Perhaps in 2-3 years, we won’t need to import fuel at all,” he added.
