Prabowo's Promise to Workers: Establishing Childcare Centres for Workers in Industrial Areas
President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the government will strive to provide childcare facilities, or daycare, for factory workers, particularly in industrial areas.
This daycare programme was mentioned by Prabowo during his speech at the commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day 2026 at Monas in Jakarta recently.
Prabowo said that he received input suggesting that the government should facilitate the provision of daycare facilities to help workers while they work without worrying about leaving their children.
“It was mentioned earlier that workers need a place for childcare, daycare,” said Prabowo in front of the masses of workers filling Monas field, quoted on Saturday (2/5/2026).
The number one person in Indonesia revealed that he would immediately follow up on the suggestion. The daycare facility programme for factory workers is hoped to be realised as soon as possible.
On the same occasion, Prabowo also mentioned that economically weak communities such as workers will be facilitated in home ownership. One of the efforts is to create a mortgage repayment scheme that is as light as possible.
“Brothers and sisters, earlier I said 30 percent for rent (house). Later, we will ensure that you will own that house,” said Prabowo.
According to Prabowo, the current mortgage regulations are considered quite burdensome, making it difficult for millions of people to access home financing facilities. He said that home financing regulations need to be simplified.
“The instalments, if possible, 20 years, if not 20 years, 25 years. If not paid off in 25 years, 30 years. If not possible, 35 years, 40 years,” he explained.
“Because workers can’t possibly run away anywhere, right? Farmers and fishermen can’t possibly run away anywhere,” he emphasised.
The former Kopassus Deputy Commander stated that due to the high mortgage instalments, many workers use 30 percent of their salary just to rent a house instead of repaying a mortgage.
“From the earlier 30 percent for rent, we will reduce it, that is to repay your own house,” said Prabowo.
