JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has pledged to establish childcare facilities, or daycares, for workers’ children while attending the 2026 International Labour Day or May Day commemoration at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Friday (1/5/2026).

This pledge is Prabowo’s response to the demands of the General Chairman of the Indonesian Workers’ Union Confederation (KPBI), Ilhamsyah, who expressed the workers’ desire for daycare facilities in industrial environments.

Ilhamsyah revealed that the reason for the demand for childcare facilities is that young workers who have recently married and have children often face dilemmas because they must leave their children in their villages.

He urged the state to be present to ensure that workers’ children receive health guarantees and proper childcare guarantees.

“We hope the state will be present to create daycares in industrial areas and workers’ settlements, so that workers’ children can live decently and grow and develop well,” said Ilhamsyah in front of Prabowo.

Hearing this request from the labour representative, Prabowo promised to create daycares in industrial environments.

The Head of State said that this request would be followed up in the near future.

“This will be implemented as quickly as possible, brothers and sisters,” Prabowo continued.

In addition to daycares, Prabowo also heard aspirations regarding the housing needs of workers.

He said that this housing would be built in clusters near industrial areas, which would automatically be close to the workers’ workplaces.

Prabowo promised that the home ownership programme for workers would be carried out with a long-term instalment scheme of up to 40 years.

Prabowo said that workers would be able to allocate their income to buy their own homes.

He explained that the instalment tenor would be made flexible according to the community’s ability, starting from 20 years up to a maximum of 40 years.

“The instalments, if possible, 20 years; if not 20 years, 25 years. If not settled in 25 years, 30 years. If not possible, 35 years, 40 years,” he stated.
