Foreign Minister Sugiono said he had coordinated with the United States and Iran regarding Indonesia’s offer to mediate the escalation of the conflict. ‘I am communicating with both sides, the US and Iran,’ Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 3 March 2026.

However, according to Sugiono, the conflicting parties have not yet made a decision. The US and Iran are still monitoring the development of the situation going forward. ‘We will wait and see, because they say they will look at the situation over the next few days and weeks,’ he added.

The Gerindra Party politician claimed to have directly conveyed Indonesia’s intention to become a mediator in a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In that exchange, Sugiono expressed regret at the failure of negotiations that led to the escalation. He also explained that Prabowo wants to cool the situation to reduce tensions in the Gulf region. ‘And these are views that he (Araghchi) has also received,’ Sugiono said.

Sugiono then stressed that Prabowo’s offer to become a peacemaker requires the consent of both Iran and the US. In recent days the Iranian Embassy in Indonesia has said that mediation with the US would not change the situation. ‘As they stated, if both sides wish it, the President would be willing to act as a mediator. But if there are such views, we will leave it to them,’ he added.

Indonesia, Sugiono reiterated, is ready to be a peacemaker for Iran and the US. ‘What is certain is that Indonesia wants to be in a position to act as a bridge between differences, offering our readiness and offering ourselves,’ he said.

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, earlier expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s mediation initiative but stressed that there had been no further communication from Indonesia. According to him, the Iranian government has yet to assess whether the plan would affect the dynamics of the evolving conflict. He also declined to guarantee the likelihood of mediation success.

‘Whether in this situation mediation can bear fruit or not, I cannot answer. But communication and interaction between senior government officials of the two countries are certainly possible and can be carried out,’ Boroujerdi said at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 2 March 2026.
