Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is accelerating the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) to a capacity of 100 Gigawatts (GW), in line with instructions from President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto. The target will be achieved gradually over two years.

Deputy Minister of ESDM Yuliot Tanjung explained that the government is currently detailing the construction in the short term. He stated that the priority capacity of 17 GW will be met first before proceeding to the total target in accordance with the President’s instructions.

“This is done with the priority of 17 GW first, so for the 17 GW, then gradually this will be fulfilled up to 100 GW,” he said when met at the Ministry of ESDM office in Jakarta on Friday (24/4/2026).

The infrastructure development will be directed, among others, through the dedieselisation programme or the reduction of the share of Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) based on petroleum fuels (BBM).

The government is prioritising regions that have high Basic Cost of Electricity Supply (BPP) to switch to using PLTS as soon as possible.

“So we map all the needs, there is a need as a substitute or conversion from this dedieselisation, then there is also gas that we use around 20 GW for this PLTG,” he explained.

Although the 100 GW target exceeds the initial target in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2025-2034, the government assures that the RUPTL is flexible. Regulatory adjustments will continue to be made to align the electricity supply plan with the current national energy needs.

“Yes, this RUPTL can be changed, it’s a plan according to needs,” he emphasised.

As is known, President Prabowo Subianto wants to accelerate the transition to green energy, one of which is with the target of building a “giant” capacity Solar Power Plant (PLTS).

He targets that Indonesia can achieve an installed capacity of up to 100 Gigawatts (GW) at least by 2029.

Prabowo emphasised that the government will maximise the utilisation of electricity from solar energy over the next three years.

“We want to move very quickly to use electricity from solar energy. We have a plan and we are determined to move as quickly as possible; in three years, we want to achieve 100 Gigawatts of solar energy,” Prabowo said at the Indonesia-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday (30/3/2026).

The plan to accelerate PLTS construction is considered urgent to realise. According to him, the escalation of conflicts and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, especially in the Middle East region, pose a threat to national energy supply stability.

“For us, this is more urgent because the geopolitical situation in the Middle East provides strategic uncertainty for our energy security,” Prabowo stressed.

As an anticipation, the government continues to strive to secure supplies through the utilisation of domestic resources. In addition to solar power, Indonesia also has great potential in the geothermal sector and is boosting the production of biofuel such as 50% biodiesel (B50) and bioethanol.
