Prabowo's Coalition Parties Meet to Discuss Election Bill; PDIP Does Not Feel Excluded
The chairpersons of political parties within President Prabowo Subianto’s coalition have met to discuss the Election Bill. The PDIP, which is not part of the coalition, does not feel excluded from the process.
“Oh, not at all (feeling left behind). Speaking from a perspective of kinship as a nation, they should certainly be invited to talk. We may differ, but our goal must be one: for the greatness of Indonesia,” said the Chairman of the Honorary Department of the PDIP Central Executive Board, Komarundin Watubun, to journalists at the DPR in Jakarta on Wednesday (16/09/2026).
Komarudin views it as natural for coalition party elites to meet. However, he reminded that the Election Bill belongs to the people.
“It is natural for coalition elites to meet. They certainly have their own strategies. But I believe this law belongs to the public. This law regulates the people of the Republic of Indonesia. We are here merely tasked with that; we represent the people to discuss laws there. So, party or coalition strategies are fine, but ultimately, it will certainly be debated in the DPR,” he said.
Furthermore, he noted that the Election Bill is customarily discussed within Commission II of the DPR.
“What has customarily occurred is that the Election Law is discussed in Commission II. I have served two terms in Commission II, so it is usually discussed there. I believe this time it will also take place around that forum,” he added.
It is reported that the chairpersons of the government’s coalition parties met to discuss the Election Bill, with one of the key topics being the parliamentary threshold.
News of the meeting was confirmed directly by Gerindra Secretary-General Sugiono. He confirmed that the party chairpersons had met recently.
“Yes, several party chairpersons gathered recently. Gerindra was represented by Mr Dasco, acting as the daily chairman, to discuss matters that need to be addressed regarding the Election Law,” Sugiono told journalists at the DPR.
Sugiono stated that an agreement was reached during the meeting regarding the parliamentary threshold, which is set at 5 per cent.
“However, there is one thing that everyone seems to agree on, though I cannot speak on behalf of other parties. But Gerindra also agrees on the 5% threshold. As Golkar and PKS also expressed yesterday, I believe that is what we have agreed upon,” he said.
