Prabowo Welcomes PM Modi in Yogyakarta for Prambanan Temple Visit
President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Yogyakarta as part of a working visit to accompany Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Prambanan Temple. President Prabowo landed at Yogyakarta International Airport, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Wednesday morning, 8 July 2026.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi revealed that one of the key agendas for Prabowo and Modi is the signing of a cooperation agreement for the conservation of Prambanan Temple. “In addition, Prime Minister Modi will also take the opportunity to perform religious observances within the Prambanan Temple complex,” Prasetyo told reporters on Wednesday.
According to a press release from the Presidential Secretariat, upon arrival at Yogyakarta International Airport, President Prabowo was welcomed by local officials. The Head of State then proceeded to the reception area to await the arrival of PM Modi, who was also scheduled to land at the same airport.
Shortly thereafter, PM Modi arrived and was immediately greeted by President Prabowo. The two leaders were seen shaking hands and exchanging greetings before proceeding with their joint agenda.
From Yogyakarta International Airport, Prabowo and Modi travelled together by helicopter to the Adisucipto Indonesian Air Force Base in Sleman Regency. The two leaders then continued their journey to the Prambanan Temple complex, also in Sleman Regency. At the World Heritage site, President Prabowo and PM Modi will inspect several areas of the temple.
In addition to the inspection, Prabowo and Modi are scheduled to witness the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Indonesia-India cultural heritage conservation cooperation for Prambanan Temple. This agenda is claimed to be a symbol of strengthening cultural cooperation between the two nations, which have shared historical and civilizational ties for centuries.
This visit to Prambanan Temple is part of a series of state visits by PM Modi to Indonesia. Modi has been visiting Indonesia for three days, having arrived in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026.
President Prabowo officially received Modi during a state event at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. They also held a closed-door bilateral meeting attended by their respective delegations, followed by a luncheon.
A number of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The meeting resulted in 16 agreements between the two nations.
During his visit, PM Modi and members of the Indian Government also visited the MPR/DPR/DPet RI Building in the Senayan area of Jakarta. In the evening, PM Modi attended an Indian Community Reception. In addition to visiting the capital, Modi also travelled to Yogyakarta to visit Prambanan Temple.
