Prabowo Welcomes German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Merdeka Palace

President Prabowo Subianto received German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for a state visit at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (15/6). The high-level meeting focused on strengthening the strategic partnership, particularly in the economic sector and human resource development. The welcoming procession began around 11.30 WIB as President Steinmeier’s motorcade entered the Merdeka Palace grounds. The German head of state’s arrival was tightly guarded by 17 motorcycle personnel from the Presidential Security Detail’s State Protocol Guard Battalion and mounted troops from the Cavalry Battalion. Along Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, a group of students enlivened the atmosphere by waving small flags of both countries. Upon arrival at the palace gate, President Prabowo greeted President Steinmeier directly with a warm handshake before both witnessed a traditional welcome dance. The official state ceremony commenced with the playing of the German national anthem and the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, accompanied by a cannon salute. Following the procession, the two leaders inspected the honour guard as the highest form of diplomatic respect. President Prabowo then introduced several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet who were in attendance. After the welcoming ceremony, the two heads of state held a tête-à-tête meeting in President Prabowo’s office, followed by a bilateral meeting. The main focus of discussions included strengthening economic cooperation and expanding skilled worker exchange programmes between Indonesia and Germany. German Ambassador to Indonesia, Ralf Beste, previously stated that the visit represents Germany’s desire to strengthen relations with strategic partners in Southeast Asia, noting Indonesia’s crucial role as the largest country in the region. The state visit is expected to provide new momentum for the long-standing bilateral relationship, particularly in facing future global economic challenges and the energy transition.
