Prabowo: We Will Soon Achieve Fuel Self-Sufficiency, No Need to Import
President Prabowo Subianto has claimed that Indonesia will soon achieve self-sufficiency in fuel (BBM). If realised, Prabowo stated, Indonesia will no longer need to import fuel.
He made this claim during a visit to Gorontalo on Saturday, 9 May 2026. “We will soon achieve fuel self-sufficiency. We will not import fuel anymore, brothers and sisters,” said Prabowo, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia is a rich nation. Therefore, the Gerindra Party Chairman wants these riches to be well managed and controlled by Indonesians themselves.
Prabowo stated that Indonesian leaders must not be lazy so that these riches are not taken over by foreigners. “If we are lazy, if the leaders are not honest or act arbitrarily, then our riches will be taken by other nations, brothers and sisters,” he said.
This retired general conveyed that the natural resources in the country must be managed by Indonesians, including in the fisheries sector. “We want it to be our people who catch the fish in our seas, not foreign ships,” he said.
This former defence minister also claimed that Indonesia is now increasingly respected in Southeast Asia. The reason, he said, is due to food self-sufficiency such as rice and corn.
“We just came from the Philippines attending the ASEAN Summit. We are highly respected because we are now self-sufficient in food,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo gave examples of several types of food that he claimed have achieved self-sufficiency. Among them are self-sufficiency in rice and corn. “We have achieved self-sufficiency in many things. We no longer need to import food from abroad,” said the Gerindra Party Chairman.
He stated that the Indonesian nation must stand on its own feet. Therefore, he wants his government to achieve food self-sufficiency and energy self-sufficiency.
Before going to Gorontalo, Prabowo first stopped at Miangas Island. Prabowo visited Miangas after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines.
