The government is launching the development of new cities integrated with industrial zones to meet the housing needs of workers. This is because President Prabowo Subianto assesses that the need for affordable housing for labourers remains high. “We have already built quite a lot this year, up to 350,000 houses, but our target is at least one million houses; we will start one million houses this year as well,” said Prabowo at the International Labour Day or May Day 2026 commemoration at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Friday (1/6/2026). He stated that each new city is planned to consist of around 100,000 housing units. The areas will also be equipped with various supporting facilities, such as schools, sports facilities, childcare or daycare centres, and hospitals. “Brothers and sisters, we will try to ensure that workers with cards can take transportation at a very low price,” he concluded.
