Prabowo Vows to Build a Professional, Corruption-Free Government
President Prabowo Subianto has stated his commitment to building a clean and professional government by accelerating bureaucratic reform and eradicating corruption and illicit levies. In his speech at the DPR plenary session in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/5), Prabowo even reminded that officials who cannot work quickly can be replaced. He noted that the business community’s complaints about extortion practices across various sectors remain a serious problem hindering the national economy. Therefore, he called on all ministries and agencies to undertake internal reform without waiting for further instructions. “We must be determined to continue building a strong, professional government, a government that is not corrupt,” he said. He stressed that all state institutions must operate more effectively and free from abuses of power. The head of state also urged leaders of institutions not to hesitate to take action against officials found to violate rules. “I remind all heads of bodies, ministers, and leaders of government institutions to immediately take the initiative to cleanse their bureaucracies. Do not hesitate; those who violate must be dealt with appropriately,” he said. Prabowo views bureaucratic reform as the key to speeding up economic growth while also increasing public trust in the government. He stressed that corruption and administrative obstacles must not be allowed to continue. “All government institutions must work well. We must eliminate corruption, abuse of power, and practices that impede our economy’s progress,” he asserted. In his speech, Prabowo also criticised the bureaucratic culture of sluggish and overly relaxed work practices. He emphasised that the government must move quickly to respond to the people’s demands and economic challenges. “The nation and the people demand work that is fast; we should not be a complacent government, a lazy government, a government that is always late. We must be a government driven by urgency, not delay,” he said. Prabowo also reminded that status as a civil servant is not a guarantee of exemption from evaluation or removal from office. According to him, all civil servants must work for the people’s interests and the nation’s future. “No one is irreplaceable. The people demand a government that is right and good. Do not think that just because you are a civil servant you cannot be dismissed; if not, just stay at home,” Prabowo stated. He also asked for DPR support to accelerate bureaucratic reform and the consolidation of state institutions. In his view, these steps are important to safeguard the future for coming generations. (H-3) President Prabowo emphasised that he is not anti-criticism. As time passes, he has come to realise that criticism is for the common good. He urged citizens to use mobile phones to record and report officials who are found to be protecting or backing illegal practices.
