Prabowo vows sweeping reform of law enforcement institutions
He said Indonesia needs a more holistic approach to transformation, with institutional reforms across all state bodies responsible for upholding law and justice.
“My objective is national transformation. I want to thoroughly improve the nation’s conditions, including by reforming law enforcement institutions,” Prabowo said in an interview, according to a statement issued in Jakarta on Sunday.
The president emphasized that fostering professional law enforcement institutions with strong integrity is essential for Indonesia’s progress.
“The rule of law is a vital part of a strong and successful country,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of public trust and legitimacy, assuring citizens that the government will show zero tolerance toward lawbreakers, including those entrusted to enforce the law.
Prabowo acknowledged that some individuals within the police force may have abused their authority, tarnishing the institution’s image.
He called on all law enforcement bodies to carry out internal reforms, warning that he would take firm action if they failed to do so.
“I will first give each institution a chance to make self-improvements,” he said.
Stressing the need for stronger oversight, Prabowo also criticized the military’s performance in detecting and acting against illegal mining activities.
He added that the government would not hesitate to hold security personnel accountable for violations. “We have dismissed several three-star and two-star generals and handed them over to the prosecutor’s office,” he said.
