Prabowo Vows Cheapest Possible Medicines for the People
President Prabowo Subianto has affirmed the government’s commitment to providing affordable medicines for the public as part of efforts to strengthen national health services. He made the statement while inaugurating the KH. Muhammad Thohir Regional General Hospital in Krui, Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung, on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. “We will strive to provide the cheapest possible medicines to the people. I hope that within this year we can begin supplying generic drugs at low prices to the public,” Prabowo said.
Beyond emphasising the importance of ensuring the public obtains affordable medicine, Prabowo also stressed the need for clean management and integrity in services so that improvements in healthcare can be felt optimally by the community. “I also convey a message: there must be no misappropriation, no corruption in services to the people,” he added.
He further explained that the government is running a national healthcare service modernisation programme that includes building and renovating hospitals, upgrading community health centre facilities, and distributing modern medical equipment to regional hospitals across Indonesia. Prabowo noted that the government had built 22 regional general hospitals in 2025 and plans to build another 22 hospitals in 2026.
Moreover, the government is targeting the construction, renovation and modernisation of 350 hospitals across all regencies within the next three years. The government is also committed to repairing and modernising 10,000 community health centres throughout Indonesia to broaden access to quality healthcare down to the community level. Prabowo said these various efforts are expected to make it easier for people to access health services quickly, especially for medical cases requiring urgent treatment.
“I am concerned; I have heard that some people have died from haemorrhaging. Giving birth and travelling to hospital takes a long time. We must overcome this. The government will continue to improve health services,” Prabowo said. Strengthening the health sector is part of the government’s effort to improve the quality of public services and ensure that people across all regions of Indonesia, including remote areas, gain access to adequate health services.
