Prabowo urges state banks not to chase profit alone but to serve the people
President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara), comprising Bank Mandiri, BRI, BNI, BTN, and BSI, not to focus solely on profit but to strengthen their role for the community.
Minister for Investment and Downstreaming and Head of BKPM, who also serves as CEO of Danantara, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, said the directive was delivered by President Prabowo during a meeting with the leadership and commissioners of the state-owned banks.
“The President’s directive to all banks and boards of commissioners was that banking should not only pursue profit, but its presence must also be felt by the community in the form of equal opportunities for MSMEs, the commercial sector, and corporations,” Rosan stated at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening.
Rosan explained that the President emphasised optimism about Indonesia’s economic conditions, which are seen as having good prospects ahead, so the banking sector is expected to play a role in strengthening financing access across all levels of society.
Rosan noted that the market value of Bank Mandiri is around Rp450 trillion, BRI slightly above Rp450 trillion, BNI approximately Rp200 trillion, with BTN and BSI also contributing to the overall total.
“If combined, the total is around Rp1,100 trillion, or about 10 per cent of the total market capitalisation in Indonesia,” Rosan said.
The Himbara executives who met with President Prabowo included Bank Mandiri CEO Riduan, BNI CEO Putrama Wahju Setyawan, BRI CEO Hery Gunardi, Bank Tabungan Negara CEO Nixon L.P. Napitupulu, and BSI Chief Commissioner Muhadjir Effendy.
Alongside Rosan, other ministers present included Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Danantara CIO Pandu Sjahrir was also in attendance.
