Prabowo Urges Lower Loan Interest Rates for MSMEs Than Corporations
President Prabowo Subianto has requested that state-owned banks grouped under the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara) broaden financing access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He even believes that loan interest rates for MSMEs should be lower than those for corporations. This was conveyed by Danantara Indonesia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rosan Roeslani after attending a meeting with President Prabowo and the boards of directors and commissioners of Himbara banks at the Presidential Palace on Thursday (18/6/2026). According to Rosan, the President stressed that banks should not be solely profit-oriented but must also deliver tangible benefits to the public through equitable financing access. “Then also provide the equality I mentioned earlier, that these small and medium enterprises, which sometimes receive higher interest rates than corporations, should actually be at the same level, or even lower,” Rosan said. Rosan stated that Prabowo believes MSME players need greater support from the banking sector because of their important role in the national economy. “It must be lower because this is truly felt by the community, especially MSMEs,” he remarked. Furthermore, Rosan said the President views Himbara banks as having a strategic position as drivers of the national economy. Therefore, state-owned banks are not only required to maintain business performance but also to support development programmes and economic growth. Nevertheless, Rosan affirmed that all credit distribution and support for priority sectors must still be carried out with prudential banking principles. “The most important thing is that everything must be executed with the principle of prudence professionally, and the presence of Himbara must truly be felt by all Indonesian people by providing equal opportunities,” he said. On that occasion, Rosan also mentioned that the President is paying special attention to financing the food sector and strengthening a more self-reliant national economy. According to him, Himbara banks have a crucial role in supporting this agenda through lending to productive sectors. “Himbara banks have a very, very strategic role not only in financing but also in economic growth and future national policy,” Rosan concluded.
