Prabowo Urges Indonesia to Learn from India on Government Stability

President Prabowo Subianto has urged the Indonesian people to learn from India, assessing that the climate of democracy in India is good. Prabowo expressed this in his welcoming speech before the Indian diaspora at the Indian Community Reception, which was also attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. According to him, despite having a population of billions, India is able to maintain its governmental stability. The Head of State stated that learning from India’s experience is important for Indonesia as a country that also possesses great diversity. “What is important is that the Indonesian people must learn from India’s experience,” said Prabowo. The former Minister of Defence under President Joko Widodo opined that India’s success in realising peaceful governmental transitions over many years is an achievement that Indonesia can learn from. “We look at India, a country of 1.4 billion people, many, many ethnic groups like us, many different regional languages. But managing so many years of peaceful governmental transitions in many states, and in the Union of India itself, this is a remarkable achievement,” he said. He added, “And Indonesia, I myself am also studying this and following India’s remarkable achievements.” On the same occasion, Prabowo also asserted that democracy is the best system. “Democracy is not an easy system, sometimes it is very chaotic. But I think we agree that it is the best system for justice, for hope, for inclusivity,” said Prabowo. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party acknowledged that democracy in practice carries various risks. He claimed there are always challenges, pitfalls, and parties attempting to hijack the democratic process for certain interests. Therefore, Prabowo invited all elements of the nation to maintain faith in democracy. According to him, this is so that the democratic process runs according to correct principles. “We must not give up. We must continue to believe in democracy and keep striving to protect it,” he said.
