Prabowo Urges ASEAN to Set Example in Maintaining Unity and Stability

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has urged ASEAN leaders to set an example in maintaining regional unity and stability.

At the 48th ASEAN Summit, Prabowo stressed that ASEAN must remain an anchor of regional stability amid escalating global geopolitical dynamics.

“We must set an example; we must truly commit to having a solid ASEAN that maintains peace, safeguards stability, and values dialogue and collaboration,” Prabowo stated during the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit held at the Mactan Expo in Cebu, Philippines, on Friday (8/5/2026).

Prabowo remarked that geopolitical conflicts and rivalries would only bring negative impacts to societies and obstruct regional development.

“We must not allow competition. We must not let our past determine our present and future. Indonesia is determined to build good neighbourly policies,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo also reminded that ASEAN must preserve its independence and avoid being influenced by global geopolitical rivalries that could fracture regional unity.

He invited all ASEAN countries to strengthen the culture of peace and regional cooperation amid mounting global challenges.

“Amid deepening divisions, ASEAN’s culture of peace must not only be preserved but also advanced to become a global example. ASEAN must truly become a zone of peace,” Prabowo stated.
