Prabowo Urges Acceleration of Energy Diversification in ASEAN, Here is the Reason

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged ASEAN countries to accelerate energy diversification amid increasing global uncertainties during the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on Friday (8/5/2026). According to Prabowo, geopolitical tensions and prolonged disruptions to major global routes have placed significant pressure on the energy resilience of Southeast Asian nations. Prabowo also emphasised that ASEAN must prepare for potential long-term disruptions by proactively building energy resilience through concrete and forward-oriented approaches. “Energy diversification is no longer a choice, but an urgent need that must be accelerated together,” Prabowo explained, as quoted from the Instagram account @sekretariat.kabinet, on Friday (8/5/2026). On that occasion, the President also outlined various concrete steps that Indonesia is taking to strengthen national energy resilience, including: * Development of alternative and renewable energy * Utilisation of bioenergy * Increased use of electric vehicles * Construction of a large-scale solar energy programme of 100 gigawatts. Through these various initiatives, Indonesia reaffirms its commitment to supporting the transition to a cleaner, more independent, and sustainable energy system, while strengthening ASEAN cooperation in building regional energy resilience.
