Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has called for the acceleration of the solar power plant (PLTS) programme with a capacity of 100 gigawatts.

This was conveyed by Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto in his statement to the media after meeting President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

Brian stated that the President specifically requested the programme’s implementation to be sped up, particularly in replacing diesel-based power plants.

“So, we were asked to report on the evaluation of several programmes, especially with Danantara regarding the 100-giga PLTS programme. The President inquired about its progress and requested that it be accelerated, particularly for the diesel ones,” said Brian.

According to him, the government is optimistic about targeting an addition of 17 gigawatts of renewable energy through PLTS in the near future.

This target includes expanding PLTS capacity while reducing diesel power plants (PLTD).

“It is targeted that this year 10 gigawatts of diesel can be reduced, and the rest will be added by approximately 7 gigawatts,” he explained.

“For now, based on calculations conducted together with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, PLN, Danantara, and several experts from universities, approximately 17 gigawatts of PLTS installation can be carried out,” he added.

Regarding the technical implementation and determination of PLTS construction sites, Brian noted that this will be carried out by PLN as the main implementer of the programme.

“The locations will all be handled by PLN as the implementer of the programme,” said Brian.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto targeted the construction of solar power plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatts in a relatively short time.

This is a strategic step to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the ambitious target of 100 per cent electricity from renewable energy in the next 10 years.
