Prabowo Unfazed by Challenges in Driving Indonesia's Economic Transformation
President Prabowo Subianto acknowledged that the government’s economic transformation agenda will not be easy. Significant changes underway are expected to face challenges from various quarters.
Prabowo stated that economic transformation cannot be delayed, asserting Indonesia must move towards an economic system aligned with Pancasila values and national interests.
“It is for this reason that I am convinced our historical duty, my duty as the eighth President of the Republic of Indonesia, is to transform the nation, particularly our national economy,” Prabowo said during the Pancasila Birthday Commemoration on Monday, 1 June 2026.
The transformation encompasses strategic sectors including natural resource downstreaming, strengthening food security, rural economic development, and improved governance.
“We are strengthening natural resource downstreaming, building national food security, and bolstering cooperatives and rural economies,” Prabowo said.
However, Prabowo acknowledged potential obstacles. Governance improvements and efforts to close economic leaks may face resistance from certain groups, yet the government remains committed to pursuing reform.
“A transformation, a major change, is never easy. We will face obstacles and challenges,” he added.
The government must also prepare to address economic practices that have harmed the nation, hence oversight and enforcement will be strengthened.
“We may also face resistance from groups that favour corruption, smuggling, and illegal economic activities,” Prabowo noted.
