Prabowo Trials KAI's Luxurious Nusantara Explorer Train

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, has introduced the Nusantara Explorer as a tourist train developed at the initiative and instruction of President Prabowo Subianto. The development forms part of efforts to strengthen national tourism through rail-based transport offering a distinctly Indonesian travel experience.

Prabowo used the Nusantara Explorer for a state travel engagement on Thursday (30 July 2026). The occasion marked the arrival of a travel concept combining comfort, service, cultural richness, cuisine and Indonesian panoramas within a single train composition.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the Nusantara Explorer is a follow-up to the President’s idea and instruction to provide a tourist train service capable of strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism.

Bobby said the Nusantara Explorer was born from Prabowo’s idea and instruction for KAI to present a tourist train offering a first-class travel experience whilst showcasing Indonesia’s cultural wealth.

“We followed up that instruction through the capabilities and creativity of KAI personnel at the Surabaya Gubeng workshop,” Bobby said in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday (30 July 2026).

Bobby said the entire development and modification process for the Nusantara Explorer was carried out at the Surabaya Gubeng workshop. The trainset is designed to comprise 12 carriages, including sleeping-cabin carriages, a Grand Restaurant, a lounge and carriages supporting operational functions.

Bobby explained that the sleeping cabins are developed in three categories: Signature Class, Advance Class and Compact Class. Each offers a different arrangement of space and level of privacy to suit customers’ needs.

“The Grand Restaurant is designed as a culinary service space with dining table arrangements and private dining rooms,” Bobby said.
