President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto wants to convert motorcycles and cars into electric-powered vehicles. This was revealed during a meeting with several journalists and experts discussing current issues at Hambalang, West Java, on 17 March 2026 from 19:00 to 01:30 WIB. “All our motorcycles will be converted to electric motorcycles,” Prabowo explained, quoted from the Prabowo Subianto YouTube account. Almost every vehicle powered by fuel oil (BBM) will be converted to electric. In the future, if anyone continues to use petrol motorcycles, the price per litre will follow the fluctuations of global oil prices. “All cars, all trucks, tractors, must be electric-powered. So, rich people who own Lamborghinis, Ferraris, can pay for petrol following world prices,” said Prabowo. “We have already made simulations, and it turns out that for those who ride motorcycles, if they use electric, their expenses drop to just 20 percent, one-fifth,” Prabowo clarified. Previously, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that he had been appointed by President Prabowo as the Head of the National Energy Transition Task Force to convert 120 million motorcycle units to electric vehicles. “The acceleration of motor vehicle conversion, with 120 million petrol motorcycles, we will try to do it gradually to convert to electric motorcycles,” Bahlil stated, quoted from Kompas.com on Monday (9/3/2026). The targeted goal is that within 3-4 years, the majority of Indonesian citizens will already be operating electric motorcycles. “This is a long-term effort to reduce our pollution as well. This is part of the new energy that is needed. The state will be present to share the burden with the community when switching from petrol to electric motorcycles,” Bahlil explained.
