Prabowo to Meet Putin in Russia
President Prabowo Subianto will visit the Russian Federation in the near future. During the visit, Prabowo is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Foreign Minister Sugiono announced the plan for the meeting. “He (Prabowo) will meet with President Putin,” Sugiono said in a video statement quoted on Sunday, 12 April 2026.
Sugiono stated that Prabowo will discuss the global geopolitical situation with Putin, particularly regarding the energy situation such as fluctuating oil prices amid conflicts in various regions. “Because this is something that is very strategic in nature for the Indonesian nation,” he said.
However, this General Secretary of the Gerindra Party has not revealed when Prabowo will depart for Russia. Sugiono only mentioned that Prabowo will travel to the Land of the Red Bear.
This visit in April 2026 will be Prabowo’s third trip to Russia as president. The former Defence Minister previously visited Russia in June and December 2025. Prabowo met with Putin on both occasions.
President Prabowo previously responded to assessments that he frequently travels abroad for leisure. According to him, his overseas official duties aim to anticipate fluctuations in world oil prices.
According to Prabowo, a head of state has the responsibility to meet various development targets. He said it is not an easy task. “So, brothers and sisters, don’t think that standing here is an easy job,” Prabowo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, 8 April 2026.
He conveyed that those who want to become president must be prepared to face that reality. “Those who want to become president, congratulations, really. I’ve already become one, so I have to work hard. No holidays for me,” said the politician who has participated in the presidential election four times before being elected.
Prabowo then discussed assessments from others that he said differ from the reality. “They say Prabowo is travelling abroad for fun. Brothers and sisters, to secure oil, yes, we have to go everywhere,” he stated.
He gave an example of his most recent foreign visit to Japan at the end of March 2026. At that time, Prabowo said he also sought various investment cooperations for Indonesia.
Prabowo said he will travel abroad again in the near future. However, he declined to reveal the next destination. Prabowo claimed that the planned official trip also aims to secure Indonesia’s interests.
Since being inaugurated as president in October 2024, or one and a half years in office, Prabowo has made at least 35 overseas visits. Most recently, he visited Japan and South Korea from late March to early April 2026.
