Prabowo to Launch 100 GWp Solar Power Programme, Electricity Savings Projected at Rp73.9 Trillion

President Prabowo Subianto will launch and conduct the groundbreaking for the 100 GWp Solar Power Plant Programme on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. The massive programme is targeted for completion by 2029 and forms part of the government’s efforts to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the launch and groundbreaking of the 100 GWp solar programme would be held at the Java-Bali Sea Crossing Operation Monument in Gilimanuk, Jembrana Regency, Bali. The programme falls under the National Priority Work Programme for the Energy and Water Independence Cluster.

According to Prasetyo, the project is directed at strengthening national energy independence and security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. President Prabowo has instructed that the construction of the 100 GWp solar plants be accelerated so that all targets can be completed by 2029.

“The President has instructed that the construction of 100 GWp of solar power be accelerated and completed by 2029, with electricity cost efficiency estimated to reach Rp73.9 trillion per year,” he said.

In 2026 alone, the government is targeting the construction of 30 GWp of solar capacity while simultaneously decommissioning 13 GW of diesel-fired power plants. This move signals the government’s policy direction towards shifting from fossil fuel-based generation to renewable energy.

The target still has considerable room to be pursued. Indonesia is known to have solar energy potential of approximately 3,294 GWp. However, installed solar capacity as of April 2026 stood at only around 1.5 GWp, meaning most of the nation’s solar potential remains untapped.

The construction of the 100 GWp solar programme will be carried out in stages. Phase I is targeted at 17 GWp, Phase II at 18 GWp, and Phase III at 30 GWp. The scheme is part of the government’s strategy to accelerate the expansion of national solar energy capacity.

Efforts to expand renewable energy have also been undertaken previously. Throughout 2025, the government built 15 renewable energy plants comprising 12 solar power plants and three micro-hydro plants with an investment value of Rp103.3 billion. The infrastructure serves 1,831 households and 131 public facilities.
