Prabowo to Inaugurate 21 Upgraded Regional General Hospitals in May 2026
JAKARTA - The Head of the Indonesian Government Communication Agency (Bakom), M Qodari, has revealed that President Prabowo Subianto will inaugurate 21 Regional General Hospitals (RSUD) currently undergoing quality improvements in May 2026. Qodari stated that these RSUDs form part of the government’s Quick Best Results Programme (PHTC) in the health sector, where the government aims to upgrade type D and type D Pratama hospitals to type C. “21 hospitals are ready to be inaugurated by the President, scheduled for May 2026,” Qodari said during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday (29/4/2026). Qodari explained that the 21 hospitals will be equipped with seven basic specialist doctors, including paediatricians, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, internists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, radiologists, and clinical pathologists. Additionally, facilities in operating rooms, outpatient services, inpatient wards, radiology, and pharmacies will also be enhanced. Qodari continued that the quality improvements are focused on hospitals in underdeveloped, border, and island areas (DTPK). “This means that people in those areas no longer need to travel far just to access specialist services,” he clarified. Qodari outlined that the 21 RSUDs are part of a total of 66 RSUDs targeted for class upgrades during the 2025-2027 period, with a breakdown of 22 RSUDs in 2025, 20 in 2026, and 24 in 2027. According to him, the programme not only enhances access to healthcare services but also delivers economic benefits. Furthermore, patients from DTPK regions can now access quality healthcare closer to their homes, eliminating the need to incur high transportation costs for referrals to major hospitals in cities. “Transportation costs for patients from DTPK who must be referred to large hospitals in cities can reach Rp 2 to Rp 10 million per visit, not including accommodation costs and lost income during inability to work. With quality RSUDs available near their residences, this burden can be significantly reduced,” Qodari added.
