Prabowo to Grant Amnesty to Prisoners on 17 August, but Freedom Comes with Military Reserve Training

President Prabowo Subianto will reportedly grant amnesty to prisoners on 17 August 2026. The Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, stated that the amnesty is planned for inmates under the age of 35, but they will not be released directly. Instead, they will be required to join the Reserve Component (Komcad) programme to instil discipline. The minister made the remarks during a national tuberculosis screening kick-off event at the Class IIA Ngaseman Prison in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java. He urged inmates to participate well in rehabilitation programmes to be eligible for the presidential amnesty. The initiative is also part of the government’s efforts to address overcrowding in prisons and detention centres, which impacts health conditions, including the risk of tuberculosis transmission. The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is conducting nationwide TB screenings across 532 prisons and detention centres, targeting 272,253 inmates.
